In 1975, Epson America, Inc. entered the U.S. market to supply original equipment manufacturer (OEM) components and peripherals to the computer and electronics market. That year, the company opened its headquarters in Torrance, California. Four years later, at a time when the personal computer market was being established and there was a need for a competitively priced desktop printer, Epson introduced the MX-80. This successful and widely distributed printer became the 'de-facto' industry standard for serial impact dot matrix printers due to its high performance, quality print output, reliability and affordability. Epson captured a 60% share of the dot matrix printer market as a result of that product introduction. In the 1980s, Epson established its reputation in the U.S. market as the leading supplier of serial impact dot matrix printers. While the company continues to maintain dominance in this market segment, Epson has vastly expanded its branded product offering to include a complete line of image capture and output devices:
In Spring 1994, the company stunned the printer industry with the introduction of a revolutionary desktop color ink jet printer, the EPSON Stylus¨ COLOR. The printer was capable of 720 dpi printing--twice the resolution found on competitive models in its class. Two years later, a successor product--the EPSON Stylus¨ COLOR 500--garnered 28 award-winning reviews in six months' time from leading magazines and newspapers throughout North America. In March, 1997, Epson shocked the industry again when it launched a new standard in desktop color ink jet printing--1440 dpi-- with the announcement of the EPSON Stylus¨ Color 600 and EPSON Stylus¨ Color 800. Today, Epson America, Inc. is responsible for the sales, marketing, distribution, service and support of a wide range of Epson branded technology products and system solutions for point-of-sale throughout the Americas. Under its brand name, Epson offers an extensive array of award-winning image capture and image output products: scanners, LCD projectors, digital cameras, color ink jet and monochrome dot matrix printers. Epson's branded products are designed for a variety of customer environments: business, government, audio visual, graphic arts and the home. As a leading supplier of diverse system device products, Epson offers point-of-sale solutions for transaction automation in retail and banking industries. It has a complete line of receipt printers, intelligent terminals, customer displays and handheld computers that are sold to end users or other companies that repackage or resell them as part of their own offering. Epson America, Inc. has been a voluntary partner of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star Program since its inception in 1993. Through the partnership, the company reinforces and illustrates its global commitment to introduce and promote energy-efficient products. Today, all Epson products are Energy Star-compliant in accordance with the EPA's guidelines for low power consumption. As a good corporate citizen, Epson America recognizes a responsibility toward the health and prosperity of the communities in which it operates. As this philosophy is an integral part of Epson's policy, the company supports a variety of community events and charitable programs through contributions of its products and resources. Epson's "whole product concept" philosophy provides the company with top quality service from the time a customer shows initial interest in an Epson product until the time the user is ready to upgrade. Customer Support may be the only contact between Epson and its large user base. To this end, the company redesigned its customer support center, the EPSON ConnectionSM, in 1992 to meet the expanding needs of its changing business. Epson developed a highly sophisticated, fully integrated service center staffed by representatives capable of responding to almost any inquiry related to the company's vast array of products, product documentation, sales and service. The computer network supporting this group of professionals won the 1992 ENNE Award for its effective use and integration of advanced hardware, software and networking products. |
